If you type moving company complaints into your favorite search engine you will be overwhelmed with entries, some entries are years old and others are only days old. Why is that? Well thats because people are moving every single day and every single day someone out there has just been traumatized by a horrible moving experience.
Moving in itself is very stressful and at times can be traumatic depending on the circumstances involved so ask yourself do you really want to add to the stress by hiring a bad moving company? I didnt think so.
Luckily there are several things you can do as a consumer to ensure that you hire a reputable moving company for your move.
What to look for when researching potential movers: First impression can tell you a lot about a company. How do they present themselves? Does someone answer when you call? How do they answer? Do they answer simply “Hello” or do they answer with a professional greeting?
Ask plenty of questions. Are they able to answer your questions to your satisfaction?
We cant forget about the oh so powerful internet. Type their name into your favorite search engine. What results do you get? Do they have a website?
These are only a few items that should be addressed when conducting your research but even this amount of research can tell you a lot about a company.
Ask for things in writing: Again the theme of this post is that we only want to deal with reputable companies. Reputable companies tend to have systems, procedures, policies etc while bad companies tend to be very unorganized and ad hoc with their operations. If you do decide to request a quote from the moving company then make sure you receive it in writing. Ask them to explain in detail their policy for dealing with damages. Ask them about mileage or any possible additional fees. You would be surprised how many companies rope you in with low quotes only to surprise you on moving day.
Watch out for Red Flags: It is totally understandable that in today’s economy people are always wanting to save money for the things they need. But dont let your desire to save money cloud your judgement. Bad moving companies usually will give you one or more red flags that should send you running for the hills. Lets start with bad publicity, if you perform a search on the company and you see a consistent trend of complaints then that should tell you something. If the company is not licensed to move your items or not insured that is also a problem. Last but not least if the company asks for a large deposit upfront before the move then you want to move on to the next company.
